Newport High School Families,

Good afternoon,

I am writing to share a brief update regarding an event at Newport High School this morning and to reassure you that all students and staff are safe.

This morning, an individual student experienced a medical emergency that required care from emergency medical responders. To ensure the student received immediate care and to protect their privacy, we temporarily called a shelter-in-place. This kept the hallways clear so first responders could support and treat the student in privacy.

At no time was there any safety threat to our school community. Once emergency personnel finished assisting the student, our regular daily schedule resumed.

Thank you for your understanding, trust, and continued support.

Sincerely,
Nick Wilson

Newport High School Families,

Due to this afternoon's weather and a loss of power at the high school, we have to cancel tonight's Open House. We know this news comes late in the day, and we are sorry for any plans this may disrupt.

Our staff was genuinely looking forward to welcoming you into the building, so we will work to reschedule a meaningful family engagement event in the near future. We want to do this right and give your family the experience you deserve.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We look forward to seeing your students bright and early tomorrow.

Go Wildcats,
Nick Wilson

Wildcat families,

Mark your calendars!

Newport High School is hosting our Open House on Tuesday, August 11 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
Stop by anytime during those two hours. There's no set schedule, so come when it works for you.

This is your chance to meet the teachers and staff who will be working with your student this year, walk the building, find classrooms before day one, and pick up class schedules. Counselors and coaches will be on hand, and you can check out the clubs, athletics, and activities your Wildcat might want to join. Bring your questions. We'll have answers.

We're looking forward to a great year, and it starts with you walking through our doors. See you on the 11th!

Household Income Form
The beginning of the school year often brings a lot of paperwork for families, but few documents are more misunderstood than the Free and Reduced Lunch form, often known today as the Household Income Form. As a school and district, these forms are not just about lunch; they are a direct tool for advocating for the resources students need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The accurate completion of this form by every family, regardless of their perceived income status, is essential to secure the following critical supports:

1. CPE / Free Meals for All Students
What it does: Allows entire schools to serve breakfast and lunch to every student at no cost. Newport Independent School District is part of this program.

How it helps: High form completion rates prove our school’s need so we can keep providing free meals for everyone year after year.

2. Title I Funding (Extra Academic Help)
What it does: Brings federal funding directly to our school.

How it helps: Pays for intervention staff, math and reading materials, learning tools, and teacher training that benefits all students.

3. FRYSC (Family Resource Youth Services Centers)
What it does: Funds our school’s resource center staff, programs, and supplies.

How it helps: Helps students overcome non-academic barriers by providing supplies, clothing, programming, etc.

4. 21st Century Grants (After-School & Summer Programs)
What it does: Wins competitive grants for free student activities outside regular school hours.

How it helps: Pays for after-school educational support/tutoring, STEM programs, after-school clubs, and summer programming at our schools.

Bonus Impact: Due to our overall free and reduced lunch percentage, our schools often qualify for specific local grants that fund in-school assemblies, field trips, and specialized services from community agencies.

Open House

Welcome to a new year at Newport High School. I am excited about what is ahead for our Wildcats, and I want to make sure you feel like a real part of it. To help with that, we will be sending you a newsletter every two weeks this year. It is an easy way to keep you in the loop on what is happening in our building, from important dates and school news to the everyday moments that make Newport High special.

My hope is that these updates help you stay informed and stay connected, because we do our best work when families and school are pulling in the same direction. Thank you for partnering with us, and keep an eye on your inbox. There is a lot of good coming this year.
