On Wednesday, throughout Newport Independent Schools, teachers, staff and students celebrated World Autism Awareness Day, which is designated on April 2. The designation was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, with the first observance occurring in 2008. "It promotes acceptance, appreciation, inclusion, and the recognition of contributions made by people with autism in their communities," Newport Primary School special education teacher Amanda Zimmerman said. "Dr. Stephen Shore, a college professor on the spectrum, said one of my favorite quotes: 'If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism.', which is a great way of saying that autism presents differently for everyone." When given appropriate supports and accommodations, children and adults with autism can have equal opportunities to access, participate, contribute, and succeed in our communities, Zimmerman concluded.

The Newport High School track and field team competed in Saturday's Stan Steidel Invitational meet at Holmes High School. Congratulations to Kayden Lynn, who earned his first varsity medal and claimed first place in the Adaptive Discus event. There were several PRs (personal records) and many of the student-athletes placed top ten in their respective events.
